Love Is Not Blind:
Differences Between The Movie And The Book
Jan 2nd, 2022

How long does it take to get better from a broken-hearted relationship? “Love Is Not Blind” is a Chinese movie adapted from an Internet novel. The story is about a woman named Huang Xiao Xian, who witnessed her boyfriend cheating on her. And the woman who was in love with her boyfriend was her best friend. After breaking up, Xiao Xian spent 33 days to get back to normal. During these 33 days, her coworker, Wang Yi Yang accompanied her to overcome this hard time. Although the movie plots are based on the novel, there are four differences in the movie and the book.
First, contrary to the book which narrated what happened every day, the movie combined several events into one period of time. Originally, the author used 33 chapters to describe what happened in the 33 days. We can deeply experience Xiao Xian’s life day after day and see the changes of her mental state. For example, she drank, watered her face with tears, and suffered from insomnia in the first few days, but afterward, she got better and better every day. However, we can see that the movie cut 33 days into several periods in the movie. We only know the events happened in a chronological order, but we don’t know the exact dates. In sum, the book delineates what happened to the main character every day while the movie does not show every detail day after day.
Another prime difference is that Wang Yi Yang’s motivation for helping Xiao Xian was not mentioned in the movie. In the film, Yi Yang supported Xiao Xian and helped her to take revenge on her ex. Moreover, they moved to live together. All the plots made audiences feel excited about their relationship. However, the reason why Yi Yang wanted to help her was clearly mentioned in the book. In Yi Yang’s last relationship, he cheated on his girlfriend just like Xiao Xian’s ex. By helping her, he wished his sense of guilt could be lightened a little bit. In sum, why the actor helped the actress is only mentioned in the novel but not in the movie.
Finally, while Yi Yang’s gay personality was rarely mentioned in the book, it was vividly shown in the actor’s body language in the movie. In the book, Xiao Xian strongly doubted that Yi Yang was a gay due to his feminine character, but there were only few depictions on it. However, in the movie, the actor was able to show his feminine temperament through his body language. For example, he used gestures, hand cream, and lip balm all the time to make him look like a gorgeous woman. Although the character settings were the same in both versions, the actor gave me a more vivid image of the role in the movie than in the book.
In conclusion, four noticeable differences can be found in the book and the movie: the expression methods in time, how Xiao Xian’s got her cello, Wang Yi Yang’s motivation for helping Xiao Xian, and Yi Yang’s vivid gay image. Both versions are awesome with their own features. But if you are interested in this story, I suggest that you watch the movie first!
